Two Westcountry film-makers missed out on Oscars glory at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Torquay's Roger Deakins made it 10th time unlucky on Sunday in the cinematography category, after the James Bond film Skyfall was beaten by Life of Pi. Mr Deakins, an old boy of Torquay Boys' Grammar School, who has a home in Kingswear, had flown the flag for the region on Hollywood Boulevard along with novice film editor James Taylor, from Plymouth. Mr Taylor, 32, edited the micro-budget project Head Over Heels, which was nominated in the Best Short Film (Animated) category, but lost out to Paperman, by John Kahrs.
