Sussex --

CELEBRITY chef Valentine Warner turned on Heathfield's Christmas lights on Saturday.

Crowds lined the streets to see the BBC chef flick the switch alongside Cross-in-Hand pupil Kylie Vandyke and Father Christmas, who arrived earlier in an Aston Martin to the soundtrack of James Bond.

Some 150 people attended the popular event, which included music folk groups performing and Santa's Grotto in the High Street.

Mr Warner, who lives nearby in Rushlake Green, said: "Apart from the rain and the cold it was good."

He said he enjoyed seeing pupils from Parkside Primary School singing carols to the crowds.

Mr Warner, who is known for his popular BBC 2 series What To Eat Now, is just finishing off his fourth book, which stresses the importance of eating properly.

He said: "It is not an express recipe book but it is very accessible. We live in a world of crazy diets but we just need to eat properly.

"The thing we say we don't have the time for is the very thing that keeps us and our families alive.

"Cooking is a lifestyle."

He said he was particularly impressed with living in Sussex near to places such as Hastings and Rye.

He added: "These places have amazing fish. There are also a lot of suppliers doing well too. I got it all here." Reported by This is 8 hours ago.
