It seems that Tolkien fever is still very much alive. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" opened to a record-breaking Friday.

Peter Jackson's adaptation of Tolkien's novel grossed $37.5 million, Box Office Mojo reports.ext This total gives "The Hobbit" the highest-grossing December Friday ever, according to THR.ext"The Hobbit" beat out previous record-holder "I Am Legend," which made $30.1 million in 2007 on its opening Friday. THR reports that Warner Bros. is predicting a $85 million weekend for "The Hobbit," based on its Friday total.

"The Hobbit" majorly outearned every film at the box office on Friday, as Daniel Day-Lewis' "Lincoln"ext took the number two spot with a $1.9 million total for Friday. The Steven Spielberg film has made $102.5 million since its release. The latest James Bond movie, "Skyfall,"ext was close behind, reaching number three for Friday with $1.8 million. "Skyfall," which stars Daniel Craig as James Bond, is the biggest James Bond movie in history, grossing $267.2 million.

The final "Twilight" movie, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2,"ext dropped out of its leading place, making $1.4 million on Friday, giving it the number five spot in the box office.
