Jayson DeMers: The Top 3 Games From PAX East 2013

PAX East 2013 has come to an end, and this year's lineup of games was impressive. The event was absolutely packed, but luckily it was very well-managed. Crowds and long lines prevented me from playing most games, but I was able to watch and even privately preview many. Here are the top three games I'm looking forward to playing after seeing them at PAX East 2013.

*1. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag*

This game absolutely blew me away (my full review can be found here); the wait to privately view the preview was nearly two hours, but it was worth it. Beautiful scenery, landscapes, and features such as improved naval battle have me more excited for this game than I have been for any game in years.

Set in 1715 in the Caribbean islands during the golden age of pirates, players will get to experience a beautiful, tropical, Caribbean island complete with coastal villages and harbors, sandy beaches, and a vast inland rainforest. Underwater exploration will also be possible, which looks gorgeous and thrilling. It's currently set to release on October 29, 2013.

*2. Elder Scrolls Online*

Though I didn't have time to wait in line for this game and experience it hands-on, the massive video screen looping an impressive trailer was enough to sell me. The trailer boasted beautiful graphics that surpass those of any other game in the MMORPG genre, along with stirring battle scenes depicting mass battlefields and epic medieval weaponry.

Giant dragons and other monsters such as mammoths will apparently populate the land as well, which should provide a winning formula for fans of fantasy-RPGs. According to Wikipedia, the game has been under development for over five years, which means it's sure to be packed with rich content and adventure. It's slated to launch in mid-to-late 2013.

*3. Watchdogs*

This is another game I had the pleasure of privately previewing. The game is set, Grand Theft Auto style, in a futuristic Chicago, where almost everything is connected and automated via artificial intelligence; traffic lights, security cameras, vehicles, ATMs, and even personal cell phones. Players will play as Aiden, a stealthy, James Bond-type character who has somehow figured out how to hack into this artificial intelligence network, allowing him to manipulate almost anything in the network freely with his cell phone.

The video depicts Aiden using his cell phone to access private information about people walking down the street, hacking ATMs to withdraw money, manipulating security cameras, and even derailing a train. It's a futuristic stealth thriller that has me excited to delve into its story and essentially become a high-powered super hacker in a real-life environment. Reported by Huffington Post 5 hours ago.

The most important developments from the New York motor show, which opened its doors this week

Jaguar and Mercedes tried the hardest, but the New York motor show was about just one car, the Range Rover Sport.

Sure, having James Bond behind the wheel helped generate the sort of global headlines to make marketing mean leap for joy, but that shouldn’t be allowed to overshadow the triumph of the all-new Sport. Like it or loathe it, the off-roader that owners love to drive in sprawling cities is a car that demands attention.

What’s remarkable is just how far Land Rover has pushed the Sport. Lighter, faster, more efficient, stiffer, more agile…...the list of improvements is long and the margin of the improvements, on paper at least, hugely significant. Make no mistake, Land Rover could have done less and earned more, but this is a thriving company that can smell an even brighter future; taking liberties with its halo products isn’t something it’s about to do.

Jaguar’'s presence was minor by comparison, but you had to admire the way it went about generating a buzz with its small selling but high impact XJR and XKR-S GT  Here, you sense, is a company biding its time, putting in the groundwork for an explosive future. For now, projects that push the boundaries of existing cars are fine, but once the F-Type is bedded in, we should expect the upcoming small saloon and SUV to deliver booming sales. In New York, though, it was probably satisfying enough to have cash buyers on the stand demanding immediate delivery of the GT.

Of the rest, the Mercedes CLA45 AMG provided an amusing diversion, dampened slightly by the slightly muted drive verdicts of the standard car, the new Kia Soul looked great but seems likely to continue to mystify European buyers slightly, and the Subaru WRX’'s potential impact was muted by its maker’s insistence on keeping it under wraps until the second day of the show.

Elsewhere on the show floor, it was a case of where your tastes took you. Not even Daniel Craig got the crowds whooping and hollering as loudly as the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, while the new Jeep Cherokee, Chrysler 200, SRT Viper TA and Shelby Mustang GT500 S/C 1000 all had their fair share of homegrown chutzpah.

No matter. Every show only needs one star to shine. And in New York that star was straight from the A-list.

Would-be James Bonds wear tuxedos for paintball sessions

Because every man wishes he was James Bond, a paintball website is allowing them to run around dressed as their hero while shooting down infamous Bond villains… but using a paintball gun rather than a Walther PPK.The Skyfall Paintball package, which has been launched to celebrate the new 007 movie, gives paintball players the opportunity to re-enact some of the cult hero’s most iconic scenes, all while wearing a tuxedo.Villains will be played by the site’s staff and participants are being warned to keep tuxedo spending to a minimum as it's unlikely they'll be able to get the paint out of the clothes should they get shot. However, paintball spies won't look quite as smooth as Daniel Craig, due to safety regulations they will still have to wear unstylish safety goggles. UKPaintball.co.uk founder Justin Toohig said: "I think at some point in every man’s life they’ve dreamt of being Bond and now for one afternoon we’re offering them the chance. "Bond is cool, calm and collected, excellent with the women and lives an exciting life as he jets across the globe to battle threats to the nation’s security."Players will be able to act out some of their favourite scenes and will be given a full license to bruise."LINKSUKPaintball.co.uk      Reported by newslite.tv 22 hours ago.

New York motor show: Top 10 gallery

As always, the New York motor show played host to some spectacular debuts in 2013

The New York motor show delivered the sort of buzz befitting of the city that never sleeps. Here are our favourite show cars.

*1. Range Rover Sport *

What else could it be? Delivered by James Bond on the eve of the show, the car’s incongruous reputation for being a dynamic SUV that is bought by chiefly city-dwelling urbanites meant it was in its element in the Big Apple. But take time to read the full technical story, ride story and interview with designer Gerry McGovern and you’ll soon understand there’s far more to the Range Rover Sport than the show gloss.

*2. Jaguar XKR-S GT *

A touch controversial this choice, because a limited run, £130k-plus XK is sure to divide opinion. In itself, though, it was a creation of pure aggression. The design team admitted that aerodynamic rather than aesthetic requirements took priority, but the raw end product more than delivered on both fronts. It will also be used as a test bed for future Jaguar tech, which will feed in to more products down the food chain.

*3. Jaguar XJR *

When your stable-mate is shutting down streets in Manhattan and wheeling out the Hollywood A-list, it’s no mean feat to cause a few ripples yourself. Jaguar managed a double whammy of success by unveiling the mind-blowingly quick XJR. You’d be brave to buy one over a Maserati Quattroporte – but looking at the on-paper figures we reckon you’d have an awful lot of fun doing it.

*4. Mercedes CLA45 AMG*

Another day, another show, this is the car that could have stolen all the headlines. Instead, despite its brooding presence, drop-dead good looks and immense powertrain, its arrival was slightly overshadowed. Perhaps it was the muted response to recent first drives of the standard car, or perhaps it was the fact Mercedes unveiled an electric B-class at the same time. Chalk and cheese don’t mix.

*5. Kia Soul *

If you don’t understand the hullabaloo surrounding the launch of the new Kia Soul, then you need to get to America, where it’s the coolest car that the kids want mum and dad to own. And, looking at the sales figures, mum and dad are often taking the path of least resistance. Has the styling evolved enough to make an impact in Europe? Probably not, but it won’t stop them trying.

*6. Jeep Cherokee*

With a bit of luck, the front end looks will grow on us, because this Jeep Cherokee has the makings of a fun addition to the SUV maker’s family. Jeep claims great on and off-road performance, frugal engines and a nine-speed gearbox, plus a host of new in-car tech. Stop for a moment and think of Land Rover's current success, based on its authentic off-road heritage, and then wonder what might happen if Jeep can gather some momentum.

*7. Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 *

The whooping and hollering had to be heard to be believed when the covers came off the fastest production Camaro yet made – here was a homegrown hero that could set the crowds abuzz without the need for a film star to be in tow. Powered by the Corvette ZO6’s 7.0-litre V8 and subjected to a weight-saving, aerodynamic and handling programme, it certainly lives up to its billing.

*8. BMW Concept Active Tourer*

It wasn’t new, having been on the motor show circuit for several months now, but its appearance in the USA was significant, because it highlights the hopes and aspirations that BMW has for the front-drive Mercedes B-class rival when it goes on sale in the next 12 months. With cars like this, the image of America being transported in large pick-up trucks is diminishing by the day.

*9. Cadillac CTS *

The proof, as ever, will be in the pudding, but Cadillac is making some lofty – and really rather feisty – claims about its Europe-bound BMW 5-series rival. Whether it can live up to them remains to be seen, especially as we’ve heard it all before and been disappointed, but there’s no doubting the car’s striking design and impressive performance claims. Full marks to them for trying.

*10. Subaru WRX *

It could have made minor shockwaves in New York, but the unfathomable decision to keep the new Subaru WRX concept under covers until the second day of the show rather took the wind from its sails. Few car manufacturers engender the goodwill that is shown to Subaru, and few models can stoke up that passion like a new WRX. Let’s hope they can make a business case for it back in the UK. The actor on playing the legendary South African, palling around with Prince Charles, having a hat spat with Liam Gallagher and the rumour that he'll be the next James Bond

*Hi Idris. Are you very drunk? (1)*

I'm having a great fucking time. We had a dress rehearsal for this, believe it or not. Let me tell you, they don't water their drinks down like they do in the film industry.

*You've got three films coming out this year (2). Which one should I be most excited about?*

They're all exciting in different ways. I'm most excited about Mandela. Pacific Rim I saw the other day, which is ... if you like that sort of film, that sort of massive real-life cartoon with really good actors and really good effects, you're gonna love it.

*The PR who organised this said that you might win an Oscar for the Mandela film. *

I've not heard that. But it's a great film. It's a real picture postcard of his life, and I'm proud of it.

*Nelson Mandela has already seen parts of it, hasn't he?*

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I wasn't with him, but I got told that he was really happy. He even asked: "Is that me?"

*In a Mandela-off with Morgan Freeman's Mandela and Terrence Howard's Mandela (3), where would your Mandela come?*

Hands down the best. Hands down the best. Not in terms of performance. But my film's about his entire life. Anyone wanting to understand who Mandela was should go and watch my film. Morgan Freeman is outstanding. Terrence Howard is an outstanding actor. But my film is about his life.

*I saw on Twitter that you've been palling around with Prince Charles today ...*

Yeah! Me and Prince. Sorry, me and His Royal Highness. We were giving out awards to young achievers from The Prince's Trust. It was such a special afternoon. It was the first time I'd met His Royal Highness. He gave me a badge.

*What does someone even talk about with Prince Charles?*

He's a very smart man, very warm. He just likes to know who you are and what you're doing. Apparently he knew who I was. He wants me to send him a DVD of Mandela when it comes out.

*You're definitely going to be the next James Bond, I heard.*

Who?

*James Bond.*

I'm not recollecting who that is.

*Naomie Harris named you as the person she wants to be James Bond after Daniel Craig (4). She's Moneypenny now. It sounds all sewn up.*

Naomie Harris I know. James Bond I'm still struggling with. [World's longest pause] No, it's a massive rumour. That's all it is, honestly. I'd be screaming it from the fucking rooftops of my council flat in east London if I got James Bond, but it's just a rumour.

*Never mind. At least Luther's back soon.*

In September. He's an old-school detective. He's recognisable without you knowing it. Neil Cross has got a real love affair with old school characters, flawed characters. These are the same characters that we've watched for years. So Luther has that sort of texture to him. I love Colombo and all them old guys, and that's what I try to inject.

*Do you ever Google yourself? Have you seen all the fan gifs of you and James McAvoy professing your love for each other (5)?*

James MCAVOY? See, this is why I don't Google myself. I find that very disturbing. I think James McAvoy is fucking awesome, though.

*Apparently you almost got into a fight with Liam Gallagher last week at the NME awards.*

Not really. We just had a little exchange of words.

*About a bobble hat, I heard.*

MY hat, not a bobble hat. It got blown out of proportion, but we kept our hats on, so to speak. It was a good hat, man. I guess he just took against it. He must have thought it looked silly, because he tried to grab it.

*How's your music career going?*

I love it. I've been DJing mostly, and most DJs end up producing. That's just me. I've just been offered a residency in Ibiza this whole summer with Ibiza Rocks with Zane Lowe, Mark Ronson, Example. We're going to have a smashing time. But at the same time I'm going to make some music.

*Are you still singing?*

I still sing on bits and pieces. Singing's something that I love to do, but it's not something that I pursue as a career. I did a rendition of Billie Jean which is on my Soundcloud. I put it on Twitter, and it got about 3000 hits that day. People were like "Really?"(6) It's a very dark rendition of Billie Jean, but that's the sort of musician I am.

*Last question: are you bored of explaining Prometheus to people yet?*

I've never had to explain Prometheus to people, ever. Most people get it.

*Really? Even the bit with the old guy hiding on the spaceship?*

The old guy is trying to preserve life. He's got so much money that he froze himself in order to preserve his life.

*Is that why he was pretending to be dead?*

Well, while he was in cybersleep, he put up an anagram of himself (7)
to explain to the people on the ship what they were doing. He didn't tell them that he was still alive on the ship, because he was asleep. Argh, don't print this. It'll only confuse everyone.

'We Call Him Franchise Viagra'

LOS ANGELES -- When your film franchise has gotten tired – the Fast aren't quite as Furious, the Mummy needs a reason to Return – Dwayne Johnson is the guy to call.

The 40-year-old actor has become a savior of stale film series, injecting new life into "Fast Five,""The Mummy Returns,""Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and now "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." The former professional wrestler rocks established franchises by joining them on the second or subsequent installment and boosting the property's box office.

"Fast & Furious 6" and "Journey 3" are on the way, and Johnson's "Mummy" character got his own spinoff film, "The Scorpion King."

"We call him franchise Viagra," said "Retaliation" director Jon M. Chu. "He comes in and he elevates everything, not just physically, but energy-wise... He was the only one in our minds that could reinvent G.I. Joe and carry the franchise forward."

In "Retaliation," Johnson takes over for Channing Tatum, the star of 2009's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." Tatum plays a smaller role in the sequel as Johnson introduces moviegoers to Roadblock, a character from the G.I. Joe universe who's built like a tank but always served second in command.

"He was the glue who held all the G.I. Joes together, but he was happily in the shadows," Johnson said. "To bring him to life and then try to help elevate the franchise with that character is pretty cool."

Johnson grew up playing with G.I. Joe action figures, so he was especially excited to be a part of Joe's second cinematic outing.

"It would be like if George Lucas called me and said, `Hey, want to be in Star Wars?" the actor said.

In fact, he's open to joining any film franchise he might be able to help.

"If I can create a character that audiences will really like and love going on a journey with – whether it's `Fast Five' or `G.I. Joe' or even `Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,' or everything else we have coming up – then I jump at that opportunity," Johnson said, noting the creative challenge. "How do you elevate something that's already successful? What do you do? How do you make it different? How do you make it fun? How do you make it cool?"

The Associated Press asked Johnson what role he might play in some of the top-grossing movie franchises of all time, including a few that may seem finished. The Rock, tongue firmly in cheek, is willing to revive them.

_ STAR WARS: "That could happen. I only say that because of my love for the mythology of `Star Wars.' ... Boba Fett could work. But it can't be the Boba Fett as we know. We can't hide my magic (gestures to his face). This is magic, my friend (laughs). There's got to be a cross between a Sith and a Jedi. What is that? Don't know what that is yet. We've got to create it."

_ JAMES BOND: "I love that franchise. Daniel Craig has been great. You know my grandfather was a baddie in `You Only Live Twice' with Sean Connery. They had this awesome fight scene. So he kind of opened up the doors in my mind a little bit at least. So yeah, absolutely – me chasing down Daniel Craig. But here's the thing. Here's my idea. Chase down Daniel Craig and then become the new Bond. That's what we do ... That's never going to happen, OK, but go ahead."

_ BATMAN: "Um. Let's take a crack at it. I love that. `Batman.' Do I say that? `I'm Batman.'"

_ SHREK: "With `Shrek' we create a five-legged Brahma bull with three horns.. He's neutral. And sometimes he stutters."

_ TWILIGHT: "We would introduce the biggest, baddest, most manliest vampire the world has ever seen or will ever see. Go to Kristen Stewart, grab her by the back of the head, pull her in closely. Here comes Pattinson. Pie-face him out of the way. Look at her before I kiss her: `We're doing away with boyhood things.' Push him out of the way. Give her the kiss. Change her life. Then I'd bite her; rip her face off (laughs)."

_ PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: "We have Johnny Depp on one side, that pirate, then we have myself on another side. I'm a pirate – don't believe in drinking, don't believe in cussing. A clean pirate who happens to be boring. Yes, yes, that's it. How exciting is that? You're lining up. Everyone's lining up to see it."

_ INDIANA JONES: "I would be a professor at the University of Miami of course, naturally ... who stumbles upon something that is considered the fountain of youth. Give it to the real Indy. We go back in time. He becomes Indy from `Raiders of the Lost Ark.' Then we both set off."

Big Trouble For Arnold & Sly?

$
0

Earlier this year, a scary thing happened to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone: They became expendable for audiences, at least when starring in movies not called "The Expendables."

Schwarzengger, 65, back in front of the camera in a leading role for the first time since 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" weathered his worst opening in 27 years with "The Last Stand." The action film earned just over $12 million overall, a tally even lower than Schwarzenegger's much-maligned 1996 flop "Jingle All The Way" grossed during its opening weekend. Stallone, 66, didn't fare much better with "Bullet to the Head," which earned just $9.4 million at the North American box office, roughly three times less than the Stallone bomb "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot" pulled down in 1992. Added together, "The Last Stand" and "Bullet to the Head" totaled $21 million in North America, a far cry from the $85 million the pair earned together in "The Expendables 2" last August.

Even fellow "Expendables" cast member Bruce Willis, 58, an A-list star who made a career balancing blockbusters like "Armageddon" with indie releases like "Moonrise Kingdom," stumbled this year. Willis' fifth "Die Hard" film, "A Good Day To Die Hard," grossed just $24 million during its opening salvo; overall, the film has earned only $66 million in North America thus far, about half of what the last "Die Hard,""Live Free or Die Hard," grabbed from ticket buyers in 2007. (Willis still has muscles overseas; "A Good Day To Die Hard," which takes place in Russia, has earned $219 million in foreign ticket sales.)

"Time was that these guys were box office gold regardless of the movie, but today's entertainment landscape is exponentially more competitive than it was 25 years ago when these guys were in their heyday," Hollywood.com box office expert Paul Dergarabedian told HuffPost Entertainment. "The movies they star in (and their concepts) have to be spot on to grab contemporary audiences."

Which doesn't necessarily mean that the movies have to be good, just marketed in a way that makes audiences want to show up. Take "Olympus Has Fallen" with former box office pariah Gerard Butler in the leading role. Despite many negative reviews and a star with a conga line of flops over the last five years, the film earned $30 million during its opening weekend -- just $5 million less than the openings of "The Last Stand,""Bullet to the Head" and "A Good Die To Die Hard" combined.

"The marketing was terrific and Butler's willingness to stump for the movie was also a key factor in its ability to perform at nearly $10 million above opening weekend expectations," Dergarabedian said. "Also, the concept of the movie was cool (shades of 'Air Force One') and they had a good release date as perfect counter-programming to the kid-friendly animated film 'The Croods.'"

The same couldn't really be said for "The Last Stand" or "Bullet to the Head," two action films that never looked like anything more than the type of cable movie your father might fall asleep watching on Friday night.

"People need a compelling argument in order to open their wallets and that could include an intriguing story, an exciting trailer, unique special effects, or a combination of it all," Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru, told HuffPost Entertainment.

As Pandya noted, it's not just aging action heroes dealing with the increasingly fickle nature of the audience; Tom Cruise and Matt Damon also watched their recent films flop, lending credence to the idea that movie stars are as obsolete as Blackberrys. Wrote Mark Harris in a GQ piece about the new rules for leading men:

If, in 2013, our primary allegiances are to genres and concepts and properties rather than to people, if our biggest modern movie stars are Batman and Bourne and Wolverine and James Bond, and if the most a flesh-and-blood actor can hope is to be chosen to serve as the temporary avatar for one of those characters, then what meaning can the term movie star possibly have?

Harris concluded that "movie star" has plenty of meaning, which is true; it's not the same meaning Stallone and Schwarzenegger might be used.

"You can't just count on your brand name anymore," Dergarabedian said. Reported by Huffington Post 6 hours ago.

MI5 deputy named as director general

Andrew Parker will succeed Sir Jonathan Evans, who is stepping down after six years in charge

Andrew Parker, who led the MI5 response to the London 7/7 bomb attacks, has been named as the new head of the domestic security service.

Parker, 50, who has honed his surveillance skills as a keen birdwatcher and wildlife photographer – a hobby he shares with James Bond's creator, Ian Fleming – will succeed Sir Jonathan Evans on 22 April.

A career MI5 officer, Parker said: "It is a great honour to be appointed director general of MI5. I am extremely proud of the work the men and women of MI5 do to keep country safe in challenging circumstances. I look forward to leading the service through its next chapter."

That chapter is sure to include developing an effective response to the rapidly growing threat of cybercrime, one of the biggest challenges facing MI5.

Parker was appointed as deputy director general of the security service, as MI5 is formally known, in April 2007 and he has been the chief officer responsible for handling counter-terrorism operations at the security agency.

His official biography states that he has worked in all major areas of security and intelligence work including countering al-Qaida-related plots, Middle East terrorism, counter-espionage, Northern Ireland terrorism, and serious and organised crime. His CV includes a liaison posting in the United States and a three-year secondment at HM Customs and Excise as director of intelligence.

Parker led MI5's response to the London bomb attacks of 7 July 2005, oversaw the rapid expansion in counter-terrorism work in their aftermath and led development of the agency's regional network. In 2006 his teams played the lead role in disrupting a bomb plot aimed at bringing down multiple transatlantic flights.

He is said to be well known in the Cabinet Office and in the corridors of Whitehall. Such surefooted political lobbying skills have become increasingly important for MI5 in recent years.

The home secretary, Theresa May, said Parker would bring a wealth of experience to the job. "Under his leadership the service will continue to stay ahead of global and domestic threats to our national security and further develop its reputation as one of the world's most effective security agencies," she said.

It is believed that other senior officials, including one outsider, were in the running for the job. The outgoing Evans told David Cameron and May this year that he wanted to leave when his existing contract ran out in April. He took over from Lady Manningham-Buller in 2007 and was knighted in this year's new years honours.

Evans was the driving force behind the justice and security bill, which will introduce secret court hearings designed to prevent disclosure of sensitive intelligence and security information. This month he said he felt it necessary to warn new recruits to keep their activities ethical, legal and proportionate to retain the trust of ministers and the public.
