Castro organist aims to raise $1 million
The Mighty Wurlitzer rises from its pit to the stage of the Castro Theatre, and David Hegarty is working the levers and keys and switches and pedals to pump out the show tunes, just as he has done almost every night for 30 years. Fifteen minutes later, the organ sinks back down to signal the start of the movie, which on this night is the James Bond film "Casino Royale." The final notes, "Doom, doom, doom, doom," signal that Bond is in peril, and so, as it turns out, is the Wurlitzer Hope-Jones Unit Orchestra. Into the Bond role comes Hegarty, a professional musician who last week received federal approval for a nonprofit organization called CODA (Castro Organ Devotees Association). '[...] to none' "We have this dream of making it the largest organ in the western United States, with a sonic experience that is second to none," says Hegarty, whose voice quivers as he makes a statement so lofty. Allen Harrah, a prominent organ builder in West Virginia, is drawing up plans to enhance the existing Wurlitzer pipes with a digital system and speakers surrounding the auditorium. Into the dungeonTo reach the organ, he has to climb down slippery concrete steps into a dungeon and feel his way through the dark to a tunnel that runs under the stage. James Bond and the new Range Rover Sport in New York

The new Range Rover Sport will be unveiled on the eve of the New York motor show tonight. Reports suggest that 007 will be taking the covers off

New York isn’t exactly short on razzmatazz, but as the sun rises on the city that never sleeps today there is slightly more anticipation in the air than normal. And it’s all because of the new Range Rover Sport… and James Bond.

Car launches don’t normally capture pages of column inches in the mainstream press, but Land Rover appears to have pulled off something of a coup by signing up Daniel Craig to unveil the new Range Rover Sport in its biggest single market, on the eve of the New York motor show.

The car company won’t confirm anything, but after some filming in the city a few months ago, the mega-bucks project ramped up a gear over the past few days as blocks of roads were closed for rehearsals ahead of tonight’s unveiling.

As the local press tells it, the film will show a Range Rover Sport being crated up and then being driven around selected locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Locals know there’s a flooded tunnel and a helicopter involved, too, as they’ve watched it being filmed – and because the stuntman involved blabbed.

Then there’s a live finale, in which reports suggest that Craig will parachute in to the unveiling and then drive the new car on stage. All in, it has the makings of a presentation worthy of 007, as well as reminding hardcore car enthusiasts like us that a) Land Rover is a thriving British success story and b) the very best (profitable) cars deserve more than a smattering of applause as a cover is pulled off by a grey suited CEO.

If you get the Bond thing, you can watch this apparent blockbuster live by going to the official Range Rover Sport unveil page.

After that – or if you don’t really do Hollywood – then rest assured that autocar.co.uk will bring you the full Range Rover Sport technical story, plus exclusive images from the reveal. Reported by Autocar 4 days ago.

Reader reviews roundup

Welcome to our fifth reader reviews roundup. In this instalment readers tackled issues of secrecy, conflict and adventure!

This week HorseLover3000 wrote a wonderful review of *H.I.V.E by Mark Walden*. A novel about a secret school - hidden beneath a fake volcano - which teaches children to become criminal masterminds! She loved the fast paced storyline: 'the action never stops... this book had me hooked from the first page' and thought the novel was a fantastic read for all those aged 11 and above.

Meanwhile, littlepud1 had mixed feelings about *Charlie Higson's first young James Bond book: Silverfin*. Young Bond in this book endures terrifying mutated eels and murderers as he uncovers a mystery at his aunt's lodgings in Scotland. Littlepud1 commented:

"The ending is very exciting... It gets into the mystery too late but you still won't want to put it down... Some kids will enjoy Alex Rider more but overall it is a good book with lovable characters. I liked this book and I hope you will too."

If you enjoy dystopian novels, you might want to try *Divergent by Veronica Roth*. This story is about a world divided into five factions based on a single core value. When Tris finds she does not fit into any of the factions, she must abandon her entire family to become one of the Dauntless. Site member PearlyDewdrops wrote a fantastic review in which she described her love of the book:

"I think it was a heart-pounding and taut debut. I was immersed in the story right from the beginning. It has been labelled as 'the next Hunger Games' which is understandable due to the many similarities in both trilogies but the overall storyline and the romances are different, completely original and their own.

I would recommend the story to anyone who enjoys a haunting young-adult novel that will leave you excited and craving more."

On a similar theme of magic and mystery, Rachie wrote an extraordinary review of *Seraphina by Rachel Hartman*. This tale is about a young lady who is half-dragon, half-human! As tension rises between the dragons and the humans, Seraphina struggles to protect her secret:

"Seraphina was a captivating book. The plot exciting and the characters suited the story perfectly... My favourite character is fruit bat - he sounds very funny and I felt very sorry for him when Seraphina found out he couldn't talk. A thrilling book, I would recommend it to boys and girls aged 9+."

The division of society is a continuing theme this week. Likewise, SilverRoo wrote a riveting review of *Knife Edge by Malorie Blackman* - in which he describes the conflicting world of Noughts and Crosses!

"Knife Edge by Malorie Blackman is intriguingly great. It's a fantastic follow on to Noughts and Crosses, Blackman's first book in the series. Jude McGreggor is a Nought, a pale skinned inferior in a world run by Crosses. Persephone (Sephy) Hadley is a Cross, one of a class of black rulers looking down on every Nought... I love this book because of the hard choices that each character has to face. The relationship between the different people in the book is so similar to ours in our world that it makes the characters even more realistic. Blackman has really captured that hate in this wonderfully written book."

And finally, lilybelle wrote an lovely review of* Little Darlings by Jacqueline Wilson*. The story is about a girl called Destiny who lives in a flat with her mum, and a daughter of a famous popstar.

"This story it inspired me a lot... although I would have liked to know much more about the ending; I had a feeling that there were still things to be said and done and maybe more secrets to be revealed. I liked the way that it was told from both Destiny and Sunset's points of view... I'd rate this book 9/10, because, as I said, I'd have liked to know more about the end."

And that's it for this week. Thanks for all your superb reviews – if any of your reviews were mentioned drop us a line at guardianchildrensbooks@gmail.com and we'll send you a surprise book from our cupboards.

We hope you enjoyed this week's readers review roundup. Happy reviewing!

Why Your Next Phone Will Include Fingerprint, Facial, and Voice Recognition

$
0
0
In some ways, it’s a marvel that even half of consumers bother to lock their phones. You would think the benefits would be obvious enough: by entering a few numbers, you can achieve a basic level of protection from prying eyes.  But according to a recent study, 44% of users said that even this was too much of a hassle - worse, 30% weren’t even worried about mobile security at all.  From 0000 to 9999 there are 10,000 possible combinations of digits, yet in a sample of 3.4 million passwords, over 10% decided that “1234” was their strongest choice. For years now, consumers have been demanding a better way, something more convenient and less time-consuming.  As it turns out, they may have had the answer all along without even knowing it - their body parts can serve as their next password.  Biometric identification, which works by using the unique characteristics of your body to prove who you are, may be the key to a much more effective system. In fact, it is an almost certainty that within the next few years, three biometric options will become standard features in every new phone: a fingerprint scanner built into the screen, facial recognition powered by high-definition cameras, and voice recognition based off a large collection of your vocal samples. To many in the industry, this is not a surprise but an inevitability.  We store an enormous amount of some our most intimate and personal information on cell phones.  Businesses today are constantly struggling with policies regarding bringing devices from home; a study by Symantec showed that mobile device security was the greatest area of concern for organizations around the world.  PIN numbers are better than nothing at all, but nowhere near enough in a world where cell phone theft now makes up a major portion of urban crime, and a missing device means lost company secrets. Ever since Apple purchased Authentec Inc in July of last year, there has been an endless stream of news stories obsessing over whether Apple will include a fingerprint scanner in their next release.  In reality, Apple is one among many players, and whether they include a biometric sensor in the 5S or wait till the 6 is largely irrelevant, the entire mobile industry has been headed this way for years now.  Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus phones include facial recognition already (although, they did not do a great job), accessories that can add a fingerprint scanner to your current phone have proven to be popular, and voice recognition is now available through many different services. What makes this so feasible is that the technologies needed to make these changes are already in place. Facial and voice recognition are just software; they can use the powerful cameras and microphones already in your phone.  And as the next generation of devices are made with better internal components, these systems will only get more powerful and more accurate.  Fingerprint scanners have also matured greatly over the last few years, and at least one company has already figured out how to embed the sensor directly into the screen of the device.  These more sophisticated types of log ins enable new types of functionality as well - CrucialTec has invented a system where scanning each finger can be programmed to load a different app. This switch would mark a major shift in how we interact with our devices - and if the goal is security, there’s certainly other less extreme, more measured steps that can be taken.  But behind the language of needing better passwords is a much bigger push to build trust in the idea that a mobile phone can securely be used for sensitive transactions.  Going forward, our mobile phones can serve as the gateway to our health information, location data, government services, and much more.  Entire industries are being built off this platform.  The United States still lags behind other developed nations in how they use the mobile phone as a source for electronic communication and transactions, if you can have a user feel like James Bond when they log in, they are a lot more likely to believe that a “mobile wallet” is a practical thing. There are separate questions as to whether these technologies are ready for such a wide-scale deployment.  While each have their own strengths and weaknesses, together they provide quite an improvement over the status quo.  No system is hacker-proof, but using several biometrics, as opposed to just one or just one password, could go a long way in helping to solve a few of the largest problems we associate with mobile security. Anytime you are constantly sharing personal information there are potential privacy concerns.  With this issue though, the dangers may not be as obvious as they seem at first - after all, biometric identification would be optional features and serve as an added benefit.  And there’s no more direct privacy violation than having your phone stolen, and with it, temporarily losing control over all the social media, financial, and personal accounts you had tied to it. Whenever Apple, or another giant, decides to fully embrace a biometric solution, the sheer scale and frequency which people will use it will have an enormous impact on the future of how we are identified.  When you have your body scanned multiple times a day to send a text or tweet, it becomes harder to see the process as an invasive, potentially perilous influence. In the long march of biometric technology into all corners of our daily life, this may mark the turning point where all of a sudden this type of authentication becomes normal and familiar - and forever change the way we interact with the systems around us.
